Polished Stones

polished stones

I love rubbing stones that have formed a smooth and polished outer. It is an amazing sensation (and I am pretty sure I’m not the only one!) These stones have been smoothed out by the constant flow from the stream or river. As the water constantly rushed over, it became smoother and smoother. The constant burn created a beautiful touch; one that used to be rough on the edges.

In the same way, God is wanting to polish our lives, character, thinking, strengths, and weaknesses. in order to enable God to do this, we need to do a few things ourselves for it is a partnership with God we are walking in. What can polished stones teach us?

  1. We need to get our feet wet

In order to prepare ourselves for growth, we need to jump in the water; this does mean being a little (or a lot) uncomfortable. We cannot be smoothed over if we don’t allow ourselves near the friction of the water or under the pressure of water. We cannot expect God to do anything if we refuse to dip our feet in the water. Faith requires stepping out.

1 Timothy 4:15 – Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.

2. We need to remain in the water

Polishing takes time. It isn’t one brush of water that created the new outer of the stone; but it is the constant shedding that creates its. We need to ensure that we commit to the process of God and not take it away from God in order to fix it ourselves. It may get tough and painful in the areas God is working through but at the end of the day, God knows what he is doing and what he needs to do.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

3. Change Sides or Angles

Sometimes the whole rock isn’t immersed in the water, causing some areas to be smooth and others rough. There will be different seasons in our lifes that will touch and carve different aspects of who we are. Certain seasons will affect/mold different areas; teach different lessons; and provide different insights/wisdom that we will carry in life. This is where the creativity and wisdom of God shines through. He knows what we need and he knows the time to smooth us.

James 1:4-5 – And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Let us walk in this journey with God and allow him to work within us. God has incredible plans for us, but it all boils down to us being in the process of being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Through this, God leads us to walk through amazing places and seasons in life. Let’s commit to submerging ourselves in water and allow God to smooth over our rough edges.

Matthew 6:33 – But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
